Year 10 Mentoring. You’ve just been there and done it, and know what it’s like and all the pitfalls that can hinder progress. Why not help out with the new Year 10’s, especially as some of them will have a tough time making the transition to GCSE work. See Mrs. Rash if you are interested.

Y.10 Marine Challenge and Green Power project. Were you involved with the Marine Challenge when you were in Year 10, or are you studying Design? If so why not pass on your skills and give Mr. Fraser a hand with the Marine Challenge this year. Alternatively see Mr. Blackburn about helping out with the Green Power project.

KS3 Literacy. Contact Miss. Staple if you would like to get involved with helping those in the lower school that find literacy challenging.

Mini Maths. If you’re studying maths why not give up a small amount of time during a morning registration to help those Y.7’s who struggle with their maths. See Mrs. Pett for details.

Y.7 Settling In. Visit Y.7 tutor groups once a week to work with small groups or individuals to help them come to terms with Contact Books, homework and any other issues that may arise. See Mr. Glen or Mrs. Bumby for more info.

Y.10 IT Mentoring. Mrs. Reilly is looking for volunteers to help out with Y.10 IT. You do not have to be studying IT, or be particularly good at it! Just willing and able.

Be BIG and Brave, no wimps allowed!

Climbing, at The Barn. (only 5 mins from the College)

If you want to improve your physical fitness, improve your agility, and have fun in the process, then climbing could be the programme for you.
Monday afternoon is being set aside for the climbing to take place. The plan is to visit the climbing wall on a weekly basis from 1.30- 2.55, the cost will depend on numbers, but it will be no more than £2.75. All gear will be provided.

Adventure Training

The Adventure Training programme will start running in November, and it will be open to all students in Years 12 and 13. The aim is to apply for a 55 mile team for the Ten Tors challenge. So if you are keen, enthusiastic, want to spend your weekend enjoying the outdoors and of course seeing the delights of Pupers hill, and then see MJM

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The college runs a large D of E unit, which is open to all students, if you want to enjoy good company, help the community, have a passion, or interested in sport then the Award is for you. The Award would make an ideal link with those who are doing HSLA, Arts leaders Awards, Science Leaders Awards etc. The Award is much more than expeditioning. If you feel you need something extra to get into university or college then see MJM.

Football. Mr. Martin would like to run 6th form teams this year. If you would like to take up this opportunity see Mr. Martin or Mr. Rush to arrange times for training.

6th Form Sport! What do you want? If there is the interest Mr. Rush will do his best to arrange any activity. Also, period 5 on a Wednesday is timetabled recreational PE time for the 6th Form. Meet Miss. Giles in the New Hall to see what is on offer.

CSLA. If you would like to be enroled on the Community Sports Leaders Award come along to PE 1 on a Wednesday period 5. All welcome. You do not have to have completed the JSLA to get involved.

Dance Team. Launceston college dance team is a very laid back class which is also quite dependant on commitment. The team members are selected through an audition process, then learn different dances of different genres. The team work towards a performance at the end of the year usually in the final school assembly or any other activities we are asked to dance for. Auditions will be held at the beginning of the autumn term and applicants need to be between 13 – 19 years old. Dates will be released soon and we hope to see you there!!

Amy Glen and Cully Peel.

Chess Club. It is a little known fact the Launceston College has a thriving and very successful chess club! It is open to all and runs at lunchtime in BS3 on Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s.

School teams. All the PE staff are constantly on the look out for people to assist with the coaching of the school teams in all sports and in all years. If you would like to help out see Mr. Rush and he will point you in the right direction.

Debating Team. In conjunction with the Uni of Plymouth and The institute of ideas. We need a sixth form team to enter regional heats. You do not have to study English. We need forceful, witty, persuasive people to debate current issues with other sixth formers, hopefully national finals will beckon. Great for Uni applications. See Miss Staple E7

On line College Magazine. The Blurb is back. If a media course is interesting you at university then an almost vital experience to show in your personal statement is to have involvement with a school newspaper; namely your own school. Blurb is by the students of Launceston College, run by sixth formers, so no Teacher has an effect on what we can put in it. Journalists, photographers, cartoonists and many more are needed.

Science Leaders Award.
For pupils that are studying AS science subjects the Science Leaders Award is a great way to work with younger pupils and gain an award to include in UCAS applications.
You will act as a mentor to a younger student, usually in year 7 or 8, and help them to complete their Bronze award. You will help them to plan lessons that will be taught to primary school pupils, help them to investigate a science project and at the same time work towards your Silver award.  You will be expected to keep a log of your meetings, collect evidence of your leadership development and produce a short presentation on your work throughout the year.
If you want to know more about this and feel that you would like to become involved with the scheme see Mr Wright in science
Young Enterprise. A Young Enterprise team is formed each year. Look out for your invitation.
Film Club. Film Club will run on a Thursday evening.  This is a club for people who are interested in watching and discussing important films in the history of cinema.  We will begin with a season of Sci Fi.  There will be screenings and discussion sessions. The club starts at 3.20 and ends after the film finishes. NPK will publish end time at the previous meeting so that transport arrangements can be made.

Amnesty. The College Amnesty group works with Amnesty International in defence of human rights both in the UK and abroad.  We will meet at lunchtimes once a week. See NPK for details.
Calling all stargazers. See Mr. G if you would like to have a go at GCSE Astronomy. This can be done over two terms.

Musical Activities. If you’re musically minded, or just fancy something different, the music department has lots on offer to sixth formers. Activities include: Steel Band, Choir, Orchestra, Band rehearsals, Recording studio sessions, Instrumental/vocal lessons – provided by visiting staff, Annual musical production. See Mr. Strike for further details.

Drama Productions. You don’t have to be studying Drama to get involved with productions! During September and the first week in October there will be a joint Y12 and 13 Brecht production. See Mr. Stevens for details. Also in the summer term Mr. Stevens will be casting for the annual production and looking for volunteers to help with any number of jobs that attach themselves to a production of this magnitude.

Sixth Form Association. If you want to have more of a say in what happens in the sixth form, then joining the Association may be for you. The members of the association have control over how the sixth form subs are spent and organise various events over the year. In the past the association has been involved in organizing charity events and producing a sixth form calendar. Also, the number of parties you have could depend on how many of you get involved with the Sixth Form Association! Last year the Y.13 Celebration in the castle grounds and afterwards at the Eagle House was almost entirely organized by the students in the association. See NPK or SR for more info.

International Leaders. Launceston College would like to offer students a unique opportunity to become ‘International Leaders’ This will be a superb way of developing leadership skills and it will provide young people with opportunities to develop effective ways of communicating and working with others. It will also provide excellent evidence for your curriculum vitae and university/job applications! See Miss. Matthews for further details and keep an ear open for details of a meeting in September.
